In June 2022, the International Labour Conference adopted a resolution to add the principle of a safe and healthy working environment to the ILO’s Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. The implication of this decision is that safe and healthy work is now a universal right, applying to people in all States - regardless of the level of economic development - and including groups with specific needs, such as unemployed and migrant workers. This session will explore how far due diligence approaches are equipped to address safe and healthy work in supply chains, drawing on new analysis from the ILO on “what works, for whom, and in which contexts” to improve safety and health outcomes in global supply chains. Using case studies, participants will learn how businesses are collaborating to support new initiatives to promote safe work, prevent accidents and illness and provide access to remedy. Special attention will be given to strategies to extend employment injury insurance protection for workers and employers. Finally, the session will introduce new ILO tools to assist in due diligence efforts to promote safety and health in garment and footwear.
