The new ILO guidelines on general principles of labour inspection and the future of work

Where: Valencia, Spain
When: 17 and 18 November 2022

This International meeting is organized by the ILO (Labour Administration, Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Branch in collaboration with the Madrid ILO Office) and the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy of Spain. In addition to senior officials from labour inspectorates, social partners are invited to participate, as well as other organizations such as the International Association of Labour Inspection, the European Labour Authority and regional networks of labour administration.

The event will be focused on the recently adopted ILO Guidelines on General Principles of Labour Inspection, will look into good practices in the implementation of the provisions of the Labour Inspection Convention, 1947 (No. 81), and the Labour Inspection (Agriculture) Convention, 1969 (No. 129), and will provide a platform for the exchange of solutions found to address new challenges with which labour inspectorates are faced.

The new ILO guidelines are a milestone in the field of labour inspection, giving advice on how to best structure and manage labour inspection work in any country. For this reason, it is of critical importance that labour inspection managers and decision makers are well informed of the content of this non-binding instrument when formulating labour inspection policies and regulations. It is equally important to hear from labour inspectorates the most relevant challenges in adapting national conditions to the content of the guidelines and what would be required from the ILO for an incremental approach to the universal adoption of the recommendations provided by the guidelines.

The purpose of the forum, which will bring together senior officials of labour inspectorates from around the world, is:

a) To inform on the content of the new ILO Guidelines on General Principles of Labour Inspection and highlight most recurrent challenges in implementation.
b) To share national experiences on how different countries give practice to the principles contained in the guidelines and main bottlenecks faced, in particular in light of the current challenges in the world of work.
c) To facilitate bilateral and multilateral cooperation between national labour inspection authorities.

The International Technical Forum of Senior Officials of Labour Inspectorates will contribute to this end as a crucial world forum for the promotion of the most significant principles, standards, and guidelines from the point of view of governance, to address traditional challenges and new demands for labour inspectors.
