FIRST ITEM ON THE AGENDA

Progress report on the extension of the premises
for the ILO Regional Office for Africa in Abidjan

1. As already indicated to the Governing Body at its 268th Session (March 1997),(1)  the new technical and architectural specifications resulting from the modified project led the Office to adjust its contract with EIRB, the construction company, as well as those with the other enterprises involved in the extension work (electricity, air-conditioning, lifts, etc.).

2. A mission was sent to Abidjan in May 1997 to assess the progress made, conclude the contracts with the various enterprises and coordinate the work to be done by the various trades.

3. At the time of writing this report, all the structural work of the underground part of the building has been completed and the enterprises have begun work on the remaining structure above ground. The construction work on the pilasters has been completed and the breast walls for the windows as well as the brickwork on the different floors has been completed up to the third floor. The floor slabs have been finished up to the fourth floor and the roof slab should be in place by the end of October 1997.

4. The main staircase, the emergency staircase and the lift shaft are finished up to the second floor. As the equipment for the installation of the lift is already on site, work on it will keep pace with construction. Work on the plumbing system and the wiring continues, as does finishing and painting work on the various floors. Although there has been a slight delay (three weeks) in the progress of work, due essentially to the complexity of installing the winch on account of the land configuration, the enterprises have taken steps to increase the number of crews working on the site. This means that in all likelihood the building will be finished on schedule, at the end of the year, as indicated to the Governing Body at its March 1997 session.

Geneva, 5 November 1997.
