1. The Director-General announces with deep regret the death, on 10 March 1999, of Alfred Califice, former representative of the Government of Belgium on the Governing Body.

2. Born in 1916, Alfred Califice followed his father in joining the Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne in Belgium. From 1945 to 1965 he was Secretary of the Fédération des Syndicats Chrétiens Carolos. From 1965 to 1985 he served as a Member of Parliament, first as a Deputy and later as a Senator. 3. For ten years, from 1982 to 1992, he was Government delegate of Belgium to the International Labour Conference, chairing in turn the Finance Committee (1986), Selection Committee (1989) and twice the Resolutions Committee (1987 and 1990).

4. Alfred Califice devoted his life to serving those in need and was highly regarded for his negotiating skills, patience and warmth.
